4 Considerations for Choosing Commercial Gym Flooring

Commercial gyms differ from a home setup, particularly in the number of people using it at any given time. This means their flooring material choices are considerably different. In this blog, garage floor coatings company Guardian Garage Floors lists factors when choosing gym flooring material.

4 Considerations for Choosing Commercial Gym Flooring

  1. Foot Traffic — Commercial gyms can have dozens, even hundreds of people using it at any given time, so they need better protection from foot traffic. You need flooring that has resistance against constant foot traffic, which liquid coatings have.
  2. Moisture — One person’s sweat isn’t enough to raise a room’s humidity. But given the number of people who use the gym at any time, along with the steam coming from the showers, sauna or pool, the moisture levels can affect the flooring material. Rolls or tiles are unsuitable for this purpose, as there will be gaps between the concrete floor that could trap moisture. Garage floor epoxy and similar coatings are ideal because in addition to sealing the floor, they prevent moisture intrusion.
  3. Gym Equipment — Gym equipment, including resistance and cardio machines, are heavy. Add to that plates used on weightlifting bars as well as various equipment used for crossfit training, and you have a tremendous amount of pressure pressing on the floor. In fact, the combined weight of such equipment surpasses a multi-car garage with the same floor area. Gym flooring needs to be able to withstand constant pressure without major damage.
  4. Floor Area — Speaking of floor area, a typical commercial gym has a floor area that’s several times bigger than residential basements. This means, should you decide to choose flooring with seams or tiles, there’s a greater chance of trapping moisture underneath. The flooring may also get pulled apart. You need a monolithic liquid flooring material that is both cost-effective and has sufficient floor coverage.
