Spring Cleaning Tips For Concrete Basement Floors

Spring is a great time to carry out some spring cleaning around the house. In addition to fixing leaks in your roof or having your windows washed, consider giving your concrete basement floor some much-needed upkeep. Here are some tips to help you with the task.

  • Scrub the concrete using a cleaning solution. Use a mixture of detergent and a quarter cup of ammonia and add it to a bucket of warm water to clean dirty concrete surfaces. Use a brush to apply the cleaning solution on the floor. For stubborn stains, add trisodium phosphate to the solution. Rinse with a hose, then let it dry.

  • Treat the floor with bleaching powder. For a basement with pungent smells, sprinkle a solution of chlorinated lime on the concrete floor. Let it sit for a day to really soak up the odor, and then sweep or vacuum it up. If the odor persists, consider sealing the concrete floor with a protective sealer like polyaspartic coating.

  • Get rid of rust stains. If the concrete floor has rust spots, consider applying dry cement and rubbing the spots with a piece of flagstone. This combination acts like a pumice, and it should be able to remove the rust stains.

  • Give the basement floor a makeover. If you are tired of the drab, unsightly look of your concrete basement floor and are over the time and effort it takes to clean, give it an upgrade by adding a polyaspartic coating. Because the coating is resistant to abrasion and chemicals, you do not have to worry as much about cleaning your basement floor.
