Why We Don’t Recommend Epoxy Garage Floors

Epoxy garage floors are a common choice among homeowners because of their durability and ability to provide good protection. However, like most flooring options, they have their downsides. We highlight some of them below:

Why We Don’t Recommend Epoxy Garage Floors

Short Service Life

Epoxy coatings for garage floors are only temporary solutions. They may be durable at first, but as the coating is exposed to heavy foot traffic or impact, the wear and tear begin to show. Over time, you’ll be dealing with constant repairs and replacements just to keep the floor surface in good condition.

Lack of Slip Resistance

When it gets wet, the surface of an epoxy garage floor can become slippery. Any floor coating that’s made of resin, in fact, is nonporous. You’ll be left with a garage floor that’s too smooth to walk on and can put you in a dangerous situation.

Time-Consuming Installation

Preparing your concrete floor for an epoxy coating installation can be tedious. For one, traces of oils, grease and solvents must be removed to ensure the coating adheres to the floor surface. Also, indoor moisture levels must be low enough to ensure proper coating. Otherwise, the trapped moisture can cause serious damage to the installation as it dries. As moisture evaporates, the epoxy may start to buckle, warp or even bulge.

Strong Fumes

While the epoxy floor coating is being applied, you may notice a strong ammonialike smell. This is the case for light shades of epoxy flooring. When installing dark-colored ones, the smell can be twice as strong. The fumes are toxic and can cause side effects like lung irritation and inflammation of the nose, eyes and throat. The fumes can also be dangerous for people with asthma.
