Polyaspartic vs. Polyurethane Floor Coatings

When selecting garage floor finishes or coatings, homeowners will be greeted with terms like polyurethane coatings and polyaspartic floor coatings. What are these and what’s the difference between them? Let’s take a quick look at each and what benefits they bring.

Polyaspartic

Polyaspartic floor coatings offer better abrasion-, chemical- and UV-resistance compared to polyurethane coatings. Furthermore, this floor coating type offers resistance against hot-tire peel, which means users can drive their cars on them straight from outside, even if it’s scorching hot.

Polyaspartic coatings are easy to install and are quick to dry. Contractors can install them in as little as one day. Curing time is shorter than others too – the garage will already return to service after 3-4 hours, although it is best to wait a full 24 hours before using it.

This floor coating type should be applied by a trained and experienced professional. It can be applied even in freezing temperatures, and can be applied thin to moderate film, definitely thicker than polyurethane. It can be used as a standalone flooring system, and won’t need to be applied on top of other floor coatings to work.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane coatings are cheaper compared to polyaspartic coatings but are still capable of providing a hard, durable coat that will not turn yellow over time. This floor coating offers better abrasion-, chemical- and UV-resistance compared to garage floor epoxy.

Applying a polyurethane coating on your garage means not being able to use this part of the home or building for a few days for two reasons. First, installation or application takes about 2 days, depending on the floor area. What’s more, polyurethane coatings are applied thin, and might need to be applied on top of existing epoxy.

Second, polyurethane coatings will need about 4-5 days to cure properly. Cured properly, polyurethane coatings will last a long time and can withstand a lot of impact.
