4 Common Misconceptions About Polyaspartic Floors

4 Common Misconceptions About Polyaspartic FloorsPolyaspartic coatings are relatively new compared to similar flooring systems, and it’s understandable how misconceptions about it are still around. In today’s post, Guardian Garage Floors sets the record straight and debunks the most common of these misconceptions.

  1. Polyaspartic floors are too expensive. It is true that the upfront cost of polyaspartic floors is typically higher than more common options like epoxy flooring, its durability and longer expected life span give it a lower lifetime cost. Its low maintenance requirements also equate to low maintenance costs, whether you choose to do your own maintenance or hire professionals to do it.

  2. Polyaspartic floors are difficult to maintain. A polyaspartic floor can take a lot of wear from foot and vehicle traffic, but keeping it clean is actually quite easy. A damp mop is usually enough to remove dirt, debris and most kinds of stains. Spot-treating stains usually require nothing more than a mild off-the-shelf floor cleaner and a soft brush. It’s important to note that polyaspartic floors, like other coat-based flooring, can still be gouged by sharp objects.

  3. Polyaspartic floors look the same. The polyaspartic floor installation process is fairly simple: a gray base coat is applied over the prepared concrete surface, followed by a layer of aggregate vinyl color chips and sealed by the polyaspartic layer. The key ingredient here is the vinyl chips: any amount of colors can be blended to create a unique colorway. This gives you the flexibility to match your desired color palette.

  4. Polyaspartic floors are not environmentally friendly. Floor coatings, particularly epoxy-based ones, are generally regarded as harmful to the environment because of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, polyaspartic coatings are different: thanks to their low VOC content, they do not emit as many odors, making them ideal for garages and similar spaces where ventilation isn’t always optimal. A properly-installed polyaspartic floor is also the more sustainable choice because of its long life span.
