THE VERDICT
The two most commonly-used coating materials for garages now are polyaspartic coatings and epoxy coatings. If you’re planning to have your garage floor coated in the middle of winter, a polyaspartic coating would be best for you. Why is this?
Epoxy coatings are cheaper than most garage floor coatings and polyaspartic coatings, it’s true. But the problem with epoxy coatings is that they have a number of downsides. One of the biggest drawbacks when using an epoxy coating for your garage floor is that it doesn’t dry quickly and takes time to cure. An epoxy composed of 100% solids takes about 12 to 18 hours for initial curing to be walkable, and will accept full heavy traffic after 36 to 72 hours. In addition to the long curing time, it gives off a lot of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), so there’s also a significant health hazard.
Polyaspartic coatings, on the other hand, cure in 30 minutes to an hour! Not only does it cure faster, but it’s almost odorless and has low VOCs, making it perfect for a winter garage coating installation. Other advantages to using polyaspartic coatings is that they have high durability and resiliency compared to epoxy, they have good temperature resistance and they’ll never fade due to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays (which strip the color from most things and cause epoxy to yellow when exposed).
